Jon, I was woundering you have seen a lot of different german hunting breeds in your travels. But one of the German breeds that springs to mind when i think German is the Weimaraner do they use them over there or are they just not as good as the other breeds you have mentioned.

I was speaking a hunter today and he told me there is only two breeds to think about getting for all around hunting GWP or Weimaraner.

I don't want to start a GWP V Weimaraner debate just interesting to see two dogs breed to do the same thing from the same country.

I don't know much about the Weim in Germany. I have never seen a Weim "in action" in Germany. Of the hunts I have been on, I have seen DD, DK, Wachtelhund, Deutsche Jadgterrier, and several of the blood tracking specialists. I'm guilty of hanging out with the DD guys when I go to Europe.

You might get in touch with Helene Moore, who has been active in NAVHDA for years. Another die-hard Weim guy is a poster called "McTuna", who you will find mixing in any Weim discussion on versatiledogs.com. I'd be happy to ask some of my contacts in Germany for some Weim names in Germany if you're interested.

Thank you Jon every bit helps.

I spoke to a couple of breeders but it sounds like the breed is turning into a show pony with stories of what a good hunter it's grand father or great grand father was.....Sad......Modern man turning his dog into himself.

But on the bright side one guy i spoke to who hunts his bitch and is breed from a German import dog is breeding at the end of the year. He said she is a little small of the the standed but has a huge prey drive. It's a hard road to find the perfect bitch.

It seams the German dog was in some ways short of the breed standered so wasn't used much.

What hunting season are open over the summer? Last night I came out to the living room and my brother was watching hunting on the outdoors channel. And he started talking to me about how he would like to take a week long trip and go hunting. So, me and him started talking and now we are planning on taking that trip over the summer and he is going to try and get me into hunting. I really don't know a lot about it but he told me to see what seansons were open and to tell him what I wanted to do. So I need to figure out what we can hunt over the summer. Thanx!

Wild Boar are a nuisance in my state and many others, that means they can be hunted year round.
Summer is not the best time....Bugs, snakes and meat spoilage unless you hunt early morning and can dress and ice quickly.

Im hoping to do a boar hunt in the next month if all goes well, and plan on taking my drahthaar, she will be vested and work on a bay pen to learn hog manners.

Others are coyotes and nuisance deer with permit.

Im a fisherman in the summer, but thats just me.
