My 5 and 1/2 month old pup is a great looking male. How do I determine if he is show quality or not. I don't know of any one in the area to contact.
He is of champion European bloodlines on both sides, and I think he looks like a winner. I am in Western Washington State and would like to get some oppinions on him. Thanks, Randy

Maybe looking on the breeders page and seeing if there is a gwpca member breeder near you, calling them and asking them to take a look at your dog? I think that's what i would do . . .
or asking your breeder ?

How do you have Champion European bloodlines? No such thing exists unless the dog is imported from the United Kingdom. The European dogs are given a coat and confirmation score at an approved breed show. The dog could be given a 12/12 and might even be noted as the "most perfect male or female" at the Hegewald, but there is no such thing as a bench show in the drahthaar world.

I'm pretty sure FCI has dog "beauty shows".

Yes there are "dog shows" in Germany but they are not really what matters too serious breeders. More importantly, the VDD (and other versatile breed clubs) place little value on them.

The only thing that matters is the evaluations that are given by the individual breed clubs at their own Breed Shows ("Zuchtschau'). To receive an evaluation (in the case of the VDD), a dog must be 18 months of age and have fulfilled all other breeding requirements (performance, hips, etc). Only then can the dog be taken to a "breed show". Three judges examine each dog individually against all the points of the standard. This can take 30-45 minutes because the dog is moved multiple times through all gaits as well as examined "hands on". A good bit of open discussion goes on between the judges. A number for conformation and coat is given to each dog at the end. A "10/10" dog is a solid dog in all respects. Scores of 11 or 12 are rare. "12/12" dogs are exceedingly rare. There are 3000+ new registrations very year and maybe 6-10 such dogs awarded this rating per year (that's less than 1/2 of 1%!!!).

I know of only one dog that was campaigned at european "beauty shows" and although he is a nice dog, he would not receive highest ratings in the VDD.
