Hi all,
I own a 3 yr old male and a 9 month old female GWP. Last weekend I took my 2 dogs to a large property for a Xmas get together. Barney (the 3 yr old male) began humping other dogs (a small male bitzer and then a female non desexed female Lab continuously). After 20 minutes I had to tie Barney up. My 9 month female is desexed and there is no problem there between the two. Is this a dominance thing with my male? He has never done this before with other dogs in the park (male or female) and doesn't hump objects or people. I'm thinking of having him desexed, but I am wondering if this will stop/reduce this sudden onset of behaviour I witnessed last weekend. If it is not a sexual behaviour (although he eventually focussed on a bitch Lab continuously), is this possibly a dominance issue? What should I be doing to rectify the problem? He has a far more friendly/inquisitive nature to people and other dogs than my bitch but this is the first time I have witnessed him humping other animals (especially bitches). Thanking you in advance. |

Hi,
What you are witnessing is a dominance thing. My male was like that with females (spayed or not spayed). He was fine with people. I just never let him off lead if there was a chance that he would mess with the other dogs. He was fine when we were running in the field or doing confirmation.
I had him neutered & it helped - took that problem out of the picture.

Hi Cathy,
Thank you for taking the time in replying to my post. Barney had no complaints when I had to tie him up for an hour while the other dogs were running around. I have been thinking of having him desexed since Barney went 'Viagra' on everydog also. Looks like it is the sensible thing to do along with your advice on keeping him restrained if the behaviour continues.
Many thanks,
Adrian! |

Well I'm happy to say that I had Barney desexed two months ago and the humping has stopped with other dogs (from what I can tell anyway). Also I'm happy to see that he is the same loving, bold personality that he was prior to being desexed. Many thanks for the advice!
Kind regards,
Adrian! |
