I have a 16 week old female GWP and am noticing no long hair around mouth, just a few long wiskers. is this normal or should i be seeing growth by now? I think i may have gotten a slick. Let me know what you think please..

Our GWP also doesn't have any long hair on his head. Just a few long wiskers. In fact all of his hair is very short but it is course hair. We seen the parents and other pups. In the litter there was only 2 that didn't have the long hair. We received papers to have him registered also. But we have often wondered if they didn't pull a fast one on us. Not that it really matters because we wouldn't get rid of our dog for anything.

We have one wire that looks like a shaggy little wookie and one who has a shorter coat with whiskers... I have read that there is alot of coat variation in GWP's as they are a relatively young breed...

They do have a great variation within the breed. I tested my male here last week in NAVHDA NA and some of his litter siblings were their. There was great variation in their coats. You were not taken! It is just the way it goes. I actually prefer the tighter coat.

Give it some time.
Arthur got all his wiskers after he was a year old. |

Out of my three Wirehaires, one had a short tight coat with no chin wiskers, the 2nd looked like a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon with long hair all over and my present 10 month old pup is now growing a nice beard with full tight coat. It may take up to a year to tell what you are going to have. I've seen great variations in the same litter. George

We have a 6-month old wire hair that has the very short coat so far, a little bit of chin whiskers. My parents have the sister from a previous litter who is just over a year old now and their dog has the "wookie" fur - same parents.
We've found after hunting trips that we actually much prefer taking care of the shorter hair coat, as my parents dog takes a lot of brushing and tends to have lots of bald spots where the fur got tangled and taken off in the brush.

OK - can't resist. Our Baron does not have long whiskers, but I'm not disappointed - they are "just right". (Actually I think he looks a lot like the dog in the GermanWirehaired Pointer Club of America logo). His coat is also very easy to manage - rarely have to worry about.
He doesn't usually 'pose' for photos but he is really ignoring me and watching a squirrel!
