| I wish there were some way to keep idiots from buying the breed. If you are unwilling or unable to train and socialize your dog don't buy a wirehair. If you want a dog you can buy and then neglect go buy a lab or if you want a pointing dog buy an english pointer. It is clear that the breed is going to have to change in this country where dogs are left at home to fend for themselves and get minimal training and attention. Labs are popular for a reason. Being the spiritless robots that they are they hold up well to this neglect. PLEASE. If you want to buy a pup and then neglect it DON'T BUY A WIREHAIR. |

| I posted this out of frustration from reading all the other posts below mine. Just look at them. It will be self-explanatory. |

Keith, I won't deny that I am new to this breed but my family is not.
I cannot speak for all the folks who have posted recently but I had believed that this group of Gwp enthusiasts was put up to encourage, support, celebrate and work well with their own dogs. If that's not the case, then I am sorry to have bothered you.
However, I did research this dog for over a year before we rescued our 4 yr old GWP. Yes we are having difficulties which is why I am contacting this group instead of putting him back in a shelter, back to the previous owner who abused him, or back to the breeder who obviously didn't care enough to keep him or ultimately putting him to sleep. I certainly hope that is the reason other folks have contacted this group... because they need some information because they don't want to make drastic decisions like destroying the dog.
With time, training, effort, patience and a love for the breed, we hope to have a great dog on our hands someday. I do hope we can continue to count on this group to assist myself and others to become better owners to their animals.
Yours in Hope,
Beth S. |
