|Gulf Coast Regional Elimination
On the weekend April 6 & 7, 2013 the Gulf Coast held their regional elimination at the Giddings Trial Grounds in Giddings, TX. As people came out Friday to examine the grounds they noticed that we were going to have plenty of cover and space to make the braces exciting. This year’s regional consisted of 32 dogs that had been entered to try and win the championship.
We started the trial at 7:30 a.m. with nice weather and temperatures projected for the weekend. The judges for the trial were Rob Martin and Martin Ueltschey and the bird planter Josh Martin. As the braces were ending some handlers knew if their dog was advancing or not while some had to sweat for a few braces as their dog was on the bubble. We broke after the 8th brace to eat a great lunch prepared by Pete Saineghi and his wife, which everyone enjoyed. Then we started back up and finished the day and had the 16 dogs advancing to Sunday. The dogs that placed during the qualification were as follows:
1st Place – Dixie / Pete Saineghi
2nd Place – Ginger / Pat Conn
3rd Place – Kloey / Kris Sparks
4th Place – Pepper / Ugene Olson
That evening we held the regional banquet at nice steak house and had a Calcutta to bet on which dogs we felt had the best chance at the regional. Without Pete being the auctioneer the region would not have made near the money they did, so thank you Pete for another job well done.
Sunday we started the trial at 7:30 a.m. and ran through the 8 braces to figure out who was advancing to the top 6. The odds of these dogs all advancing were very slim because we had 6 breeds represent the top 6 in our region. Those dogs were as follows:
Mallory (GSP) / Scott & Marylyn Thomas
Kloey (Vizsla) / Kris Sparks
Ginger (Brittany) / Pat Conn
VC Socks (GWP) / T.C. Morrow
Levi (EP) / Lee Monlezun
Dixie (Setter) / Pete Saineghi
We broke for another great lunch prepared by Marylyn Thomas after the braces had been drawn for the top 6. The braces were as follows:
1 – Levi / Monlezun
1 – Ginger / Conn
2 – Mallory / Thomas
2 – VC Socks / Morrow
3 – Kloey / Sparks
3 – Dixie / Saineghi
After the 3 braces had been run we knew who was going to be in the final hour championship run. Those two dogs were Socks / Morrow and Dixie / Saineghi.
The two dogs representing the gulf coast in the championship run had fought and competed against top competition the entire weekend to be in the position they were in. Dixie, a 6 ˝ year old English Setter female owned and handled by Pete Saineghi had the top score in the qualification round and the top 6 and deserved to be in the final hour. VC Socks, a 3 year old VC German Wirehaired Pointer female owned and handled by T.C. Morrow who placed 3rd in last year’s regional championship, was something special this weekend. She just had a litter of 7 puppies 3 weeks before the regional. She was consistently finding enough birds to advance each round and made it to the final hour.
We turned the dogs loose at around 4:00 p.m. for their one hour run to see who would be crowned this year’s regional champion. When both handlers and dogs came off the field we knew who was the regional champion. Congratulations to T.C. Morrow and VC Socks. This win also gave Socks her 1X NSTRA Championship. The winners were as follows:
Regional Champion – VC Southpaw Socks Morrow / T.C. Morrow
1st Runner-Up – Tomoka Pete’s Dixie / Pete Saineghi
2nd Runner-Up – Impressive Mallory / Scott and Marylyn Thomas
3rd Runner-Up – Rebel Rouser Smokin Bandieta / Kris Sparks
4th Runner-Up – Monlezun’s Perfect Fit / Lee Monlezun
5th Runner-Up – Conn’s Ginger Snap / Pat Conn
