Why does AKC refer to our breed as "POINTER (GERMAN WIREHAIRED)" instead of "GERMAN WIREHAIRED POINTER"? Do they do this with other breeds such as spaniels, hounds, and shepherds?

interesting question.... but they do do it with other breeds...
for instance....
Pointer (German Shorhaired)
Retriever (Chesapeake, Lab, Flat Coat etc)
Setter (Gordon, Irish, English)
Spaniels (Clumber, Cocker etc)

It appears it's mostly the sporting breeds. At least that
is the way is printed in a show premium I'm looking at.

How does AKC refer to the Pointer?

POINTER (POINTER)

Or the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon?

GRIFFON (WIREHAIRED POINTING)

Or the Beagle?

HOUND (BEAGLE)

I do not understand why our dogs cannot be referred to as their own breed instead of a sub-category of a totally different breed.

don't know either... guess you could contact AKC and ask them.
