Hello everyone. I am looking to buy a GWP puppy for hunting. I have done all my research of the breeds that caught my eye and the GWP fits all that I require for a companion / hunting dog. I am now in the process of looking for a breeder. I have questions about how to find a breeder and what to look for when I find one. Also what should I look for in a puppy? I know it is different for every breed. This will not be the first dog I have ever owned but it will be the puppy that I have picked out. I will most likely not be in the market to buy until next spring so I am trying to do my homework now. Any info you folks can give me will be much appreciated.

Check out Speed training your bird dog by Larry Mueller. It tells you how to go about picking the right pup. http://www.gwpca.com/html/breeders.
this web site has a listing on breeders for the USA, thats where I found a breeder close by.
Good Luck!!

You should choose a breeder that will do/be the following things:
- let you meet all the dogs they have on site
- let you see the kennel facilities
- asks you a lot of questions about yourself and your facilities
- does health checks including, but not limited to, hip x-rays, thyroid checks, cardio exams, etc.
- will tell you the good traits as well as bad traits about their dogs and the breed
- provides the dog's/puppy's paperwork when you purchase it
- will take the dog back at any time in their lives if it doesn't work out

These are just a few things I can think of off the top of my head. You also should have a repoire with the breeder and feel like you can trust them. Also, make sure you look into the pedigree and see that the relatives of the dog you'll get do what you want your dog to do (ie. hunting titles if you want your dog to hunt). Beware of breeders that don't do the activities with their dogs that you want to do, unless they're recommended by someone you trust. Also, with German breeds in particular, beware of lines that are German-bred. They are frequently sharp or aggressive. Good luck!

Thanks for the info. That should help me a lot. I sent out an email to the breeders close to me asking for info. I think this fall or next spring i will have a little puppy. LOL.
