I adopted a puppy from the local SPCA six months ago. Originally I thought he was a hard-coated Giant Schnauzer mix but I am starting to think he is a German Wirehaired Pointer mix. He is black with a bleached beard, and a white chest, and one white foot. He has a natural tail and floppy ears.

Just curious if solid black dogs occur in this breed or if the odd balls are just black/white.

While I am posting - does anyone have experience with elbow dysplasia? This pup is having surgery in two weeks to correct his elbow. He is just 10 months old.

You can get a solid black bodied gwp if a black and white is bred to a solid liver. A solid black dog is not wanted in any registry, not even in Germany where black and white dogs are abundent. That's why they don't allow black and whites to be bred to solid livers.

Many breed mixes will sort of look like GWP's if they have a wiry coat with eyebrows and beards and drop ears.... could be terrier/x lab mixes, or any variety of breeds. There really isn't any way of knowing what the heck you got. But I'll bet he's really cute! He possibly could have some GWP in him????

Elbow dysplasia isn't very common in our breed as far as I am aware. Many breeders do xray for this when they are doing hips, but I have never heard of one with the problem.

I am just curious as to where you have adopted this dog from and how old is your dog.
I have myself adopted a pure bred solid black GWP about the same time as you did. I am just wondering if these dogs perhapse could be related. If they are, I have traced back the breeder who has other solid black and of course told me they were rare and very expensive dogs ( )
