Committee reports:
FEAC: (Field Events Advisory Committee)
Report given by Liz Dixon for Doug Ljungren.

1. Judges for 2003- The committee compiled a list of prospective judges, voted on them and selected 4 Field Trial Judges. And 2 Hunt test judges. The Board did not approve of one of the judges, but did approve of the alternate judge.

2. Fees for Championship stakes was increased from$80.00 to $100.00. This was largely to offset the increased cost of bringing in judges from outside the hosting region

3. Water Retrieve for Senior and Master Hunter went into effect in June 2003. The committee voted to reconfirm the recommendation it originally made in 2000, that the GWP in order to earn a SH or MH title should pass the same water test required to earn a Field Championship or Amateur FC title. The intent is so that the breed will maintain a degree of versatility and should be able to retrieve out of water.

4. Calculations of top 10 Standings in the field- The committee voted to base the top 10 standings on the number of dogs defeated.

5. Eastern –at Large committee member: The committee selected Fran Sakiey as the new at large member.

6. Order of Championship stakes: The committee voted to make it a rule that the Amateur Championship stake should always be run prior to the Open Championship.

7. Field Futurity: The committee voted to limit participation in the Field Futurity, starting with litters nominated for the 2005 Futurity, to only those dogs that were bred and are owned/ co owned by GWPCA members!

The FEAC will hold a meeting either on Tuesday or Wednesday of the Field events. All members of the GWPCA are invited to attend

Canine Health Foundation (CHF): Report given by Jim Boyd in the absence of Michelle Boyd. Regina Schwabe and Claire Wische were thanked for their help with the Donor Advisory Fund. So far $1,600.00 in donations has been collected.

The GWPCA Donor Advised fund along with several other clubs and Nestle Purina Pet Care Company are sponsoring Grant #2254… Heritable and Sporadic Genetic Lesions in Canine Lymphoma and Osteosarcoma.

Don’t forget to sign up for the Purina Pro Club and designate your weight circles to the GWP Club. For every $100.00 worth of weight circle points, Purina donates $10.00 to our Breed club and the Canine Health Foundation matches a portion of that, plus you will earn great rewards for yourself. For more information call 1-877-776-2582.

Rescue: Cindy Heiller DVM reported for the Western United States. Cindy suggested that each club develop a rescue fund and have a local rescue person in charge of the local rescues. This would really help expedite the rescue process and be a quicker way to find homes for those wires in need.

Barb Tucker reported for the Mid West: Each Breeder needs to take the responsibility for all of the pups that they breed and be willing to take them back at anytime during their lives. Breeding litters is a life long commitment!

Mal Decker reported for the East: Mal has placed at least 20 wires into new homes and is finding that there is at least 1 new wire a month in need of rescue.

Judges Education: Judy Cheshire is the chair. Members of the committee are Joy Brewster Laura Reeves and Paula Moebus. Currently they have developed a written Breed presentation with corresponding overhead. They are working on updating the Judges Education packets.

Currently she is working on a mentor list (judges looking to judge the GWP) to make it easier. Paula Moebus currently working on a list of judges that have attended seminars for Parent Club approval. This year there were 2 judges that attended the ringside seminar at Nationals. Judy suggested that in the future we have more days of Sweepstakes, as this is a good education tool for judges. Committee members would also like to have more funds available to them. Judy also would like to have an education program for Breeders at each National with topics such as genetics, health problems etc…

Breeders Education: Judy is also the chair of this committee and is trying to get this committee up and running. At the Parent Club conference in 2002 she learned that an Illustrated Breed Standard is a very expensive undertaking.

Wire News: Jodi Quesnell reported that so far things are going well with the Newsletter. She encouraged all members to send in ads and articles to her.

Breeder Referral: Temple Da Silva sent a note to Barb saying that online and telephone requests have remained active. Telephone request are diminishing but internet request are increasing. On average she fields approximately 10 – 15 requests per month. Majority of requests are for hunting companions, followed by pets. Only the rare request is for a show dog. Temple also would like to give someone else the opportunity to become the Breeder Referral person. Persons interested should contact a board member!

Versatility Testing: Rocky Gilleard stated that the News Letter in the spring outlined a Versatility Plan, but this is not a done deal. Members need to send their thoughts and comments/ ideas to him or Sandy Hoesel. Karen Nelsen suggested that his be published in the next News Letter for comments and requests for this award.

Standards Review: Barb Tucker reported that the Board is working on developing a non-biased committee and will complete this process by the end of the year.

Field Futurity: Guy and Lori Rezzardi reported that 24 litters have been nominated for a total of 172 pups for 2003. However, only 13 dogs were nominated in the final nomination for this years Field Futurity for a total of $1700.00. At the banquet there will be a basket of goodies from Purina raffled off. This was generously donated by Purina. Please members nominate your litters and remind your puppy owners to renominate. Don’t forget that starting in 2005 all nominations both litter and renomoinations can only be made by current GWPCA members!

Show Futurity: Alyosia Hard reported that this is the 1st year that breeders and owners must be GWPCA members to compete in the Futurity. There have been 32 liters nominated with 40 dogs fully nominated. At the nationals this year there were only 27 dogs entered.

Delegate Report: Pat Laurens reported that starting with this years National Specialty or AKC Eukanuba Invitational the Best of Breed, Best Opposite Sex and Award of Merit winners are eligible to enter Crufts 2004. Nationals 2003: This year it was and is a Board run event. It has proven to be a big challenge because there are no local clubs to assist in doing all of the leg work needed to find show site, trial grounds, host hotels, banquet facilities etc…Without the generous help of both Ann and Terry Duffin and Randy Berry none of these things would have been accomplished. Great big thanks to all of you that put in your time and money to help make the 2003 Nationals.

Judy Cheshire stated that the 2002 Nationals were primarily ( 85%) board run since the Eastern Nebraska club is very small. Judy suggested that possibly we should look into having a National events co coordinator. Liz Dixon suggested that possibly we should consider hosting the Nationals at a central location each year that has a club house, show site, water for a water test and other amenities.

Lori Rezzardi stated that the first time in any new location is always difficult but it is important to keep all clubs involved in the Nationals. Randy Berry made a motion to table this discussion at this time. Mike Hemphill 2nd the motion. Motion carried.
A suggestion was made to increase show fees as the Field trial fees were increased. Judy Cheshire stated that show fees had been increased recently, but there is never any money made in the show events and an increase might possibly discourage people form entering the shows. A general discussion followed with Sarah Caldwell suggesting that Bred By and puppy entry fees be reduced. No conclusion was reached and this discussion was also tabled until a later date.

Janet Nahorn: Janet read a letter that she sent to the membership. This was in regards to the Board? changing the breed standards, with respect to now allowing the color black to be registered. Janet also read many letters from AKC regarding the color black as a registerable color. Essentially AKC stated that the color black has always been an allowable color and even if it wasn’t accepted as part of the breed standards if both parents were AKC registered then that pup can also be registered regardless of the color. Janet was given fifteen minutes to review her information.

Much discussion followed Janet’s concerns and her assumption that the standard had been changed without the knowledge of the membership.

Janet made a motion to have a Breed standard committee formed and to report back to the membership within 6 months. Motion 2nd by Ann Duffin. A vote was taken and did not pass. As was stated in the committee reports the Board is in the process of forming the committee and plans on having it done by the end of 2003.

Mark Sargent discussed the possibility of forming the show advisory committee (SEAC) to be modeled after the Field Events Advisory Committee. Laura Reeves made a motion to have this committee formed, 2nd by Judy Cheshire. Motion passed.

This being the conclusion of items on the agenda Dick Uhnavy made a motion to adjourn the meeting, 2nd by Tommy Cagle. Meeting adjourned at 11:05pm.

Respectfully submitted,
Barb Tucker
Secretary GWPCA
