Mission Statement
The goal of German Wirehaired Pointer University (GWP U) is to provide continuing educational programs in all areas of GWP interest and in so doing, help carry forth the mission of the German Wirehaired Pointer Club of America. It is GWP U’s hope to preserve our breed’s past and present experiences and legacies and to educate future GWP fanciers in a manner that is on going and available for years to come.
As is true with our dogs, GWP U will be an on going and evolving educational experience, which we hope will grow and mature with time. We would like to thank Joy Brewster for her time and efforts in getting this project off the ground.
As the years go by, our plans are to share educational materials and work hand in hand with our dedicated breeders for the betterment of our breed.
What is GWP U?
GWP U is a practical educational concept developed by the Basset Hound Club of America and is being adapted for German Wirehaired Pointers. The University is designed as an on-going school of learning in which courses on owning, breeding, competing and judging GWP’s are available year round. GWP U is dedicated to preserving the past and educating future breeders, owners, exhibitors and judges of the German Wirehaired Pointer. The concept of GWP U is similar to correspondence degree programs, where GWP breeders, owners, exhibitors and judges can take courses and complete them at their own pace at home. These at home materials will be available to you in the not so distant future. BHU was designed to be used as a model for parent clubs of all breeds of dogs. We would like to thank the originators of this concept for allowing other breeds to participate.
What will the 2008 GWP U Cover?
We will be offering several seminars, which we believe, will be helpful to both our new GWP owners and also to those who have been involved with the breed for many years.
10 :00 AM-12:30 Health Seminars
With the onset of DNA and gene mapping, we are learning more and more about health concerns in the GWP. Our mission is to educate our owners and breeders on these concerns and show us ways to breed better and healthier dogs.
1.CHIC program overview-Sherry Jackson The Canine Health Information Center, also known as CHIC, is a centralized canine health database jointly sponsored by the AKC/Canine Health Foundation (AKC/CHF) and the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA). The CHIC program is breed specific and it is up to GWPCA members to decide which diseases should be included. More information can be found at http://www.caninehealthinfo.org/chicinfo.html
2. CERF and the GWP-Robin Nelson Canine Eye Registration Foundation Dedicated to the elimination of heritable eye disease in purebred dogs through registration and research.
3. Thyroid Conditions in the GWP-Cynthia Heillor
Lunch 12:30-1:30
1:30-3:00 PM Applying Anatomy and Function to the Standard/ Judging the Conformation of the GWP
A responsibility of the GWPCA is to educate our conformation judges, and the club puts on several Judges Education seminars throughout the year. Have you ever wondered what Judges discuss regarding each breed relative to form and function? Come and learn through a judge’s eye.
Have you ever wondered what is meant by Layback or Angulation or were too embarrassed to ask- where the heck is a dogs Forearm and why is the length important? How does one know if a dog has a great, good, or not so good coat? And why is it important? What is reach and drive? How should we look for it?
This seminar will include a hands on learning experience for everyone who wishes to learn more about the anatomy and movement of the German Wirehaired Pointer.
3:00 - 3:15 Break
3:15-4:30 Field Ability- The other half of the essence of the breed- Doug Ljungren
A concern facing every performance breed is the potential division between show versus field lines. Under the AKC system, preventing this split is dependant on the collective actions of the breed supporters. Will competitive pressure and the desire to win drive a breed to toward show and field specialists? What can be done to maintain "the essence of the breed"?
How do we attend?
Each seminar will include handouts and educational materials for you to take with you
Your admission fee of $35 covers all seminars for the day, all handouts, materials and our costs for the room rental.
In order to reserve the appropriately sized conference room, have enough handouts (and coffee and goodies) we are asking everyone to pre-register.
GWP University
Fees: GWPCA members if paid before September 15 $35
Non-members of GWPCA or registrations received after September 15 -$45
Day of Seminars $55
Please mark the seminars you plan to attend
